Hypertension in older adults can become a serious health problem if left untreated.

Hypertension is defined as “high blood pressure”. An individual can have hypertension with out experiencing any symptoms. High blood pressure develops over many years. Most people with hypertension do not have any signs or symptoms, although some individuals may experience dizziness, fatigue, dull headaches, and frequent nose bleeds.

Hypertension that is untreated for a duration of time leads to risk factors:

  • increased risk for heart attack and stroke
  • arteries to clot and narrow
  • contribute to kidney disease

Treatment by a medical provider is important when dealing with hypertension. Hypertension should be more aggressively treated with younger and middle age adults to decrease risks. Individuals that are 65 and older may experience frequent side effects when being treated on multiple blood pressure medications; such as, fatigue, light headed, and balance. It is important to discuss symptoms occurring with hypertension and to re-evaluate medications adjustments with your physician.
